Scattershooting 06-08-14

Scattershooting while wondering whatever happened to the great

Don Drysdale

Sunday's Summary

My incomplete recap of the week

The Florida Gators won the NCAA Softball National Championship. They went a perfect 5-0 at the College World Series in Oklahoma City. This was the first softball championship in school history for the Gators. Congratulations and thanks for a great season.
GO GATORS!
This is amazing. Saw this on Charlie Rose. It's a whole new way to read certain items. I played with the Spritz method of reading a little bit this morning. 500 wpm is fairly comfortable and even at 700 wpm I got most of the meaning. I'll play with it some more and report back in the future. You can try it out at spritzinc.com for free.

Take a few minutes to watch or read this story about the Texas State Republican Convention and their gay members. They will accept their votes and money as long as they don't push the gay agenda. Does that seem just a tad ironic to anybody else?

Here is my entry into today's #TBT sweepstakes. This shot is of the Holmes boys in the late 1990's. I'm not sure of the exact year or the occasion for Kelly's visit to Texas. Matt was standing on the fireplace hearth and no, I wasn't. Fast forward to today. Kelly just got home from a year overseas and Matt has a birthday in a couple of weeks. Both great young men.

Thank You.
Oops. For whatever reason I decided to go to Market Street early this morning (6/7) and get the grocery shopping done over with. Shoulda gone to Kroger. I wound up right in the middle of the xSIGHTment Run. The start/finish & headquarters was at the Colleyville Community Center. Parts of Church & Riverwalk were blocked off. Luckily a bike can get by the barricades. I made it and didn't hit any runners, dogs or strollers. BTW it is damn humid out there today.

It's time for #SongSunday again. This week is Stormy from Dennis Yost and The Classics IV. Dennis has one of the most soulful voices ever. You can hear the tear in his voice on this beautiful song. Dennis is from Jacksonville and the band was formed there in 1965. As a bonus, I've added a great smashup of Stormy/Save Room (For My Love). Two good songs by two good singers blended beautifully. Enjoy!

If only politicians staffs would do this.

On this day, June 8, in 1965 history, Nolan Ryan was chosen in the 10th round of the first MLB draft. There were 20 teams back then so at least 180 prospects were "better" than Nolan. Wanna take any bets on how many of those 180 had a HOF career. One other - Johnny Bench who was a 2nd round choice. That's a pretty fair battery.

And the hits just keep on coming. Mitch Moreland, who has been the starting 1st baseman since Prince Fielder went on the DL, has now gone on the DL too. Ankle reconstruction, out at least three months. The back up 1st baseman, Joe Adduci, reinjured himself while at triple A on a rehab assignment. Ron Washington was seen prior to the game looking in the stands for someone to play. M*A*S*H had fewer wounded than the Rangers. The Rangers lost today's game and of course another starter was injured and left the game. No word yet on how serious the injury is. Can you fill up a DL?
GO RANGERS!
Mitch Moreland
